You two talked about the instructor on the beach watching a dive flag move around so as to monitor his students on their navigation dive.

The dive was in a kelp bed. It’s impossible to drag around a dive flag or any kind of buoy in a kelp bed. It would become entangled immediately.

Plus, you can’t “swim” on the surface of a kelp bed. Again, you’d become entangled. Instead, you have to do what’s known as the “kelp crawl.” It’s slow, tedious and exhausting.

Hence the students’ attempt to air share swimming under the kelp canopy. Alas, such an effort is doomed to failure unless the gas donor was using a long hose and they were swimming single file. Otherwise, they’d surely get entangled.

My buddy went out of gas during a training dive for a citizen scientist certification class, where we were doing transects for indicator species in the middle of a large, dense giant kelp forest. We had to surface and then spend almost an hour in kelp crawling to get back to the boat. As we could have swam back to the boat in a minute or two had we been able to share air under the canopy, that was the last time I ever dive with conventional gear. I immediately bought a bp/w and put my reg on a 7’ hose.
