Hal Watts

  • Hal Watts Divers Almanac Page
  • In 1967, he set a World Record Deep Air Dive to 119 meters (390'), which was acknowledged in The Guinness Book of World Records.
  • In 1970, Hal wrote and copyrighted the first manual for Extended Range Deep Diving for instructors and conducted specialty courses and certification for those interested.
  • 1970 made a World Record Deep Air Dive in a cave to a depth of 414 feet
  • As of 9-9-99 Hal had taken 55 divers to depths between 100 m (300') and 127 m (415') with ZERO ACCIDENTS.

Edd Sorenson

  • Edd Sorenson (born October 17, 1959) is a technical cave diver known for numerous rescues of lost or trapped divers in the underwater caves of Florida particularly in Vortex Spring and Blue Spring State Park.
  • In 1999, he joined International Underwater Cave Rescue and Recovery (IUCRR) as one of the original members and later founded Cave Adventurers in Marianna, Florida in 2003.
  • In April 2019 Sorenson successfully rescued Josh Bratchley, a British cave diver who assisted in the rescue of 12 boys and their soccer coach from a Thai cave, from Mill Pond Cave.

Dr. Lee H. Somers

  • Worked as a commercial hard-hat diver in Florida
  • Earned a Master’s degree in Geology from the University of Illinois.
  • Ph.D. in Oceanography from the University of Michigan.
  • He was also University of Michigan faculty for 30 years, teaching oceanography, scuba diving and diving technology, while serving as the university’s Diving Safety Officer.
  • Sea Grant’s lead researcher for Lake Lab (1970 in Grand Traverse Bay)

  • He also worked with Dr. Martin Nemiroff (University of Michigan pulmonary specialist and diving medicine expert) on the famous cold water near-drowning research and outreach Michigan Sea Grant spearheaded during the late 1970s.

Robert Shaw

  • The Deep (1977): Robert Shaw was paid $650,000 plus a percentage of the profits. Bissett and Nolte were paid $200,000 each.
  • The character of lighthouse keeper and diving and treasure expert Romer Treece (Robert Shaw) was inspired by real-life treasure seeker diver Teddy Tucker, who helped Peter Benchley write the novel. Tucker was hired as a special consultant to the production, and appeared in the movie playing The Harbor Master.
  • Author Peter Benchley can be briefly glimpsed as one of the U-boat shipmates in the prologue of the longer version of the film. The roles of the young Treece and Coffin were played by the sons of Robert Shaw and Eli Wallach.

Dick Rutkowski

  • Rutkowski joined the US government service in 1950 as a government civilian and served during the Korean War until 1970 when NOAA was established.
  • He worked at NOAA from 1970 until 1985 as Deputy Diving Coordinator, Director of the NOAA Miami Hyperbaric Facility and Director of NOAA Diver Training.
  • Rutkowski is a NOAA aquanaut, having undergone saturation many times
  • In 1985, Rutkowski began the introduction and popularization of nitrox use within the recreational diving community.
  • Rutkowski founded several organizations to focus on diver training and safety including American Nitrox Divers International (ANDI), the International Association of Nitrox and Technical Divers (IANTD), and the Undersea Research Foundation (URF).

Richard Pyle

  • Richard Lawrence Pyle, Ph.D. (born 24 March 1967) is a scuba diver and ichthyologist working on Hawaii.
  • Pyle discovered the principle of "Pyle stops" when decompressing from many deep dives in search of new species of fish, and has identified hundreds of new species.
  • Found that they prevented his post-dive fatigue symptoms after deep dives to collect fish specimens
  • A Pyle stop is a type of short, optional deep decompression stop performed by scuba divers at depths well below the first decompression stop mandated by a conventional dissolved phase decompression algorithm.

Zale Parry

Tom Mount

  • Tom Mount is a technical diver and cave diver
  • In 1991 Tom Mount joined Dick Rutkowski in the newly formed by Rutkowski, IANTD.
  • Mount has published a number of technical diving texts, including the Technical Diver Encyclopedia, Exploration and Mixed Gas Diving Encyclopedia and Tek Closed Circuit Rebreather.
  • He was also a founding member of the National Association for Cave Diving
